Large and bulging varicose veins, also known as spider veins, are the swollen veins that appear under the surface of our skin. They have a characteristic blueish or purple tint to them. These veins can occur for a variety of reasons. Although they can occur in any demographic, people in their elderly years are most affected by it. Other more commonly affected demographics include women who are pregnant and people who are obese. Roughly 1 in 4 adults in the United States have some form of varicose veins. Studies reveal that nearly everyone has the genes for varicose veins, however, these genes are dormant or “turned off”. They can be turned back on by some environmental triggers.

Obesity exerts more pressure on the veins, causing excessive stretching. This can cause the veins to weaken over time. The body must also work harder to send blood throughout the body, which places the veins under additional strain. The areas that are most commonly affected by varicose veins due to obesity are the legs because of the amount of weight they must support.
In many cases, varicose veins can be improved or prevented with home remedies. A healthy diet will lower the risk of high cholesterol and potential clotting. Exercising helps to keep your heart pumping at a healthy pace and strengthens the veins. Raising the legs and standing up is important too because sitting for extended periods of time blocks the flow of blood between the upper and lower portion of the leg. There are also over-the-counter remedies that can also alleviate symptoms associated with varicose veins.
Sometimes home remedies are not enough and seeking a specialist is necessary. A doctor will usually use a compression stocking to get the blood flowing. These are air-filled tubes that wrap around a person’s arm or leg to increase blood flow by squeezing that part of the body. Other treatments include sclerotherapy, where a doctor injects the veins with a solution used to close them up. In some cases, laser therapy is preferred. The doctor will use a short burst of lights on the veins. Over time, the veins will begin to fade.
